Glasgow


Glasgow is a lively and proud city in Scotland. While Edinburgh is the Capital of Scotland, Glasgow is actually the larger city of the two. Furthermore, at one time, Glasgow was said to be the second city of the British Empire due to the enormity of trade between the city and the Americas. At first mainly in tobacco - hence the term “Tobacco Lords” for those who made their fortunes in this trade and invested heavily in their city. The sense of civic pride was immense and large sums were invested in bold civic buildings.  The Tobacco Lords wanted to show both their pride in their wonderful city, while also displaying their own wealth. The Glasgow Boys were a group/collective of twenty five artists who painted in Glasgow through the 1880s and 1890s. As well as painting Glasgow scenes they also painted rural landscapes in a most colourful fashion. Some of the most famous artists in the group were Sir James Guthrie, George Henry and John Lavery and Culture and Sport Glasgow have struck a deal with the Royal Academy in London to display around a hundred paintings and fifty drawings in 2010 (Easter until August).
