A popular and exciting place for tourists across the world to come and visit is England. England has lush and beautiful countrysides, historic cities, and many other interesting places to visit. One famous landmark worth seeing is Hadrian’s Wall in the North East of England, which dates back to AD122. However, the first port of call for most tourists is London.

London is a wondrous place to visit whether for a city break or a two week vacation. Never just set aside one day for visiting London, you will have wasted most of your day on deciding which fascinating place to visit first. One interesting fact that would shock the tourist from other coutries is that many English people have never even visited their capital city.

There are so many things to do and see in London it is impossible to list them all at once. Surprisingly one of the newest attractions in London also happens to be one of the most popular - The London Eye. Another popular attraction nearby to the London is the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. However, one place which must not be missed is Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace only became the official residence of the British monarchy in 1837. It was Queen Victoria who chose Buckingham Palace as her official royal residence. Ever since then Buckingham Palace has been known around the world as the most famous residence of the British royal family. The palace is located in the centre of London and has always been a rallying point for the British people at times of great joy and sadness.

Buckingham Palace was originally built as a townhouse and not a palace. The Duke of Buckingham had the house built in 1703. The house was the design of William Winde, and was basically a large town house. Rumour has it that the original house built on the site of a brothel.

Over the next 75 years Buckingham House was enlarged by the additon of three wings around a central courtyard. The main architects responsible for these additions were John Nash and Edward Blore. It was also John Nash who was responsible for the interior design of the monumental staterooms.

The last of the structural additions to the palace were made in the 19th and early 20th century. One of these additions was the facade which was added in 1913 by architect Aston Webb. It is Webb’s work on the palace that we all recognise today.

Throughout England the Queen has numerous homes. Some of these homes are more well known than others. Windsor Castle in Berkshire is another official residence of the Queen not too far from London. A favourite residence with Queen Victoria was Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Balmoral is also a favourite of the current monarch. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were vacationing here when they heard of the horrific car crash in Paris in which Diana, Princess of Wales lost her life.

Glasgow is a lively and proud city in Scotland. While Edinburgh is the Capital of Scotland, Glasgow is actually the larger city of the two. Furthermore, at one time, Glasgow was said to be the second city of the British Empire due to the enormity of trade between the city and the Americas. At first mainly in tobacco - hence the term “Tobacco Lords” for those who made their fortunes in this trade and invested heavily in their city. The sense of civic pride was immense and large sums were invested in bold civic buildings.  The Tobacco Lords wanted to show both their pride in their wonderful city, while also displaying their own wealth. However many were very generous and to this day we must be grateful to them for their wise and kind investments and donations.

There are many places in Glasgow which merit at least a little thought as to paying them a visit and one such thing that should be seriously considered is the awe inspiring Burrell Collection. The Burrell Collection is an amazing collection of over 9,000 works of art. These works of art were gifted to the city of Glasgow by Sir William Burrell and his wife, Constance. They signed the deed of gift of their collection in 1944. The collection includes, medieval art, tapestries, alabasters, stained glass and English oak furniture. There is also a collection of European paintings including works by Degas and Cézanne. Another part of the collection is of Islamic art, and also modern sculpture including works by Epstein and Rodin. The collection is housed at Pollok Country Park on the south side of Glasgow.

Those who love mysteries will love a vacation on Kauai, Hawaii.

Here’s the mystery: what’s it like on the Hawaiian island of Ni’ihau? This 550-square-mile island is the westernmost of the main Hawaiian islands and has been privately owned since 1864 by the Robinson family, which forbids tourists.

Ni’ihau (Nee-ee-how) clings to the sea, low on the horizon, visible from the southwest shore of Kauai, 17 miles away. Native Hawaiian is spoken there by the 200 or so residents. In fact, it’s the only place where native Hawaiian is a living language. Hawaiian is the language of the island’s K-8 school.

Ni’ihau residents travel freely between Kauai and Ni’ihau. They need to to get provisions for living on the dry island. Ni’ihau is a desert, shielded from wet trade winds by the mountain on Kauai, Wai-ale-ale, the “wettest spot on earth.” Wai-ale-ale receives 460 inches of rainfall per year.

The Robinson family, which owns Ni’ihau, has maintained sheep ranches there.

A stunning form of folk art comes from Ni’ihau. These are Ni’ihau shell leis, tiny shells strung from many strands. These tiny luminous shells come in various colors, and so whole families collect them and sort them for size and color. Then the artist, usually a woman, sets to work, punching a hole in each shell using an awl often made from a bicycle spoke (there are no cars on the island). About half the shells shatter at this point. She chooses colors in such a way as to make a final product that is textured with color.

These tiny shells are still found on Ni’ihau, but not on neighboring Kauai where agricultural runoff has tended to kill off the shell-makers. The resulting shell leis are rare, hard to find, and precious.

Hawaiian legend has it that Ni’ihau is the oldest Hawaiian island: the volcano goddess Pele had her original home on Ni’ihau. Then she traveled to Kauai, Oahu, and moved eastward until she found the Big Island of Hawaii, where she is today. But scientists say Kauai was formed before Ni’ihau, which is sort of a side vent from the volcano that formed Kauai. The Hawaiian islands were formed as a plate of earth’s crust moved slowly across an active lava vent. As the crust moved slowly, Kauai was formed, then Oahu, and so on. Ni’ihau’s current form is as an eroded lava dome on the eastern side of the island. Much of the rest is flat and sandy, with a couple of freshwater lakes.

Seeing the low lava dome of Ni’ihau from the southwest side of Kauai is tantalizing. You can find a map of Ni’ihau. You can even find pictures of rock formations on Ni’ihau. What if you are dying to see for yourself? If you are willing to pay for the privilege, you can go–the Robinson family allows a few helicopter tours to remote beaches on Ni’ihau. Or they may let you take a hunting safari to shoot feral bighorn sheep and Polynesian boars, when those populations need culling. Or you can scuba dive offshore–no permission needed.

All that is available from Kauai, Ni’ihau’s big sister island 17 miles away. Kauai has immense charms of its own; not only does it have the usual beaches and surf, but it has incredible beauty on its northwest coast, called Na Pali, or The Cliffs.

If your life is lacking a bit of amore, it is time to take a trip to the southern region of Italy. Many tourists are slightly nervous when it comes to visiting Napoli thanks to a reputation filled with crime and the unknown. The truth is that real Italian life can only be seen whilst wandering the busy streets of Naples.

You will find that most Napoli guidebooks tell you to veer towards the port side of the city where most tourists sit sipping cappuccino. While the docks are certainly convenient for catching boats to nearby Amalfi, absolutely do not miss out on the grit and charm of this town.

If you are on a diet, Napoli is not going to be the place for you. Also known as Naples, the city has wicked food. Pizza was created here, which should tell you everything. The chocolate shops are sinful as are the pastry ones.

You can purchase handmade Italian cameos in nearly every tourist town surrounding Naples, but they are all made within Napoli itself. Putting on those walking shoes will allow you to visit the many small shops inside of the city that craft the best cameos in the world.

The best thing about Napoli is it is making a comeback. Known as a hidden gem by serious travelers, it had a bad reputation for a long time. The reputation was not really deserved, and travel writers are now realizing as much.

One just has to take a look around to realize the true beauty of the city. This is not the sham touristy images on a brochure. These are real people. They hang out drinking cappuccino like they have for hundreds of years. You should just drink it all in as well.

Once you are settled, get out and just walk the downtown area of Naples. You will find all kinds of authentic, fascinating people. You can watch talented artists turn a piece of wood into the most amazing toy. The experiences will leave you fulfilled.

You might be hesitant to check out Napoli. Do not be. It is tremendous. One visit and you will be hooked. It is my favorite Italian city. Unlike Rome and other cities, life actually feels like it is not tailored around the almighty tourist dollar.
