Once you have made the commitment to head out on an adventure travel vacation, you need to start making preparations for your trip. There are a lot of things you need to think of and have ready before you take off. Have you thought about all the things you will need to take with you on the trip to have the best time possible? You need to start making a list now so you don?t forget anything once your adventure begins.

If you are heading out on adventure travel, your vacation could be cut short, or just be miserable if you are not well prepared for the climate and conditions that you are going to be encountering during your adventure.

The first things you need to consider long before you leave on your trip is that you have all the documentation you need in order to go. If you are traveling to a new country, you need a passport. If you do not have one, you need to put in for your passport far in advance, or it can be very costly to have it rushed to you. Some countries demand you have a visitor?s visa in order to go, you should find out if this is necessary and make sure you have the appropriate paperwork in order. You can ask the tour operator, they should know what you need to have and be able to help you get everything together.

Next, you are going to need spending money, so make sure you have the funds you need for the trip. You should put cash into traveler?s checks and make sure that any credit cards you are going to take with you will not expire while you are on the trip and that you have available credit to use if you need to purchase things. It would be very rough to try and pay for something you need while you are in a foreign country only to have your credit card not work.

Not all insurance policies will cover you when you go adventure traveling, so you may want to call your health insurance company to find out what you are covered for while you are on the trip. If they will not cover you, you will have time to look into traveler?s insurance to make sure you have some coverage while you are traveling.

While you have made the decision to go on an adventure travel trip, this is new territory for you, and you may have a lot of questions. Don?t just let those questions fester. Ask someone. You can call the company you are booking your trip through to ask them any questions you may have about what to pack, what you need to take care of before you go, and anything else that comes to mind. You will not enjoy a trip if you are worried about things that you have not asked about. You may also want to carry local maps in case you get lost. Instead, get all those worries out of the way by asking any questions you have and then enjoying your trip.

Dumfries and Galloway is a region of Scotland found in the southwest corner which is becoming increasingly popular with tourists as a vacation destination.  While this area of Scotland has all of the usual tourist attractions, ruined abbeys, stately homes and castles, it is the lush countryside and fantastic Solway coast which attracts most. The rather moderate weather and the numerous sandy coves have led to the areas nickname of the “Scottish Riviera” and, with a close association with Robert Burns and the wonderful village of Kirkcudbright (a one-time artists’ colony) there is plenty to discover in Dumfries and Galloway.

Each year it would seem that more and more people are choosing to visit music festivals. This year has seen a massive increase in the number of music events across the globe and in the United Kingdom there have been over four hundred this year. Obviously not all such events are as large as Glastonbury but even the smaller events manage to raise crowds of many thousands of people.

Towards the end of July each year the peaceful Dumfries and Galloway is rocked by the raucous sounds of one of Scotland’s most exciting music festivals, the Wickerman Music Festival. The site for the festival is at East Kirkcarswell, near Dundrennan right in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway and for as far as the eye can see there is beautiful countryside populated only by sheep, cattle, and a whole horde of very friendly festival folk.

The Wickerman Music Festival is unusual form several reasons but most noticeable is the fact that it is a theme based music festival. Rather than being a festival of a particular type/genre of music its’ theme is an old British movie Wickerman (1973) which, over the decades, has obtained a cult following. Although there has been a Hollywood remake, in 2006 starring Nicolas Cage, many much prefer the original which was rather unique, to say the least!

As with all music festivals there are the usual funny and interesting costumes but at Wickerman this takes on a whole new perspective as the costumes of the festival goers is all part of the experience. Many people sport animal costumes similar to those which appeared in the movie and the festival site is littered with all manner of references to the movie including an open air cinema. However the most exciting aspect of the Wickerman Music Festival is the burning of the Wicker Man on the Saturday evening which includes various fire acts accompanied by haunting bagpipes.

Wickerman is considered a family friendly music festival with many aspects geared towards family entertainment. This includes a full fairground, many circus events and acts including jugglers and stilt walkers as well as many small stalls and other areas of entertainment besides the music stages and tents. In the camping area there is a family and quiet area and, unusually for music festivals, the toilet facilities are usually rather clean. However if you want to ensure a clean toilet and you would rather not use one of the plastic portloo types then there is the “down and dirty” which, for a small extra fee, provides you with proper porcelain toilets which are continually monitored for cleanliness and toilet roll etc. There are also, if required, showers available in the down and dirty area. There are plenty of food stalls, clothing stalls and lots of other retailers including bars.

Being held in the gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway countryside it is wonderful to see that the Wickerman Music Festival organizers have gone to great lengths to ensure that there is minimal impact upon the local, and global, environment. It is actually the “greenest” music festival I have attended and each year more effort and thought goes into improving this aspect of the music festival. Litter is never a problem as “wickerpickers” can be seen wandering around collecting litter and categorizing it into the various types ready for recycling. Around the camp site there are various places to put materials suitable for recycling and even the abandoned tents are packed up and sent off to charity. It is truly amazing that only a very short time after the event it looks as though nobody was ever there!

Finally I will mention the music of the Wickerman festival, after all that is what it is all about. Most UK music festivals seem to focus upon one, or maybe two, specific genres of music but at Wickerman there is a most amazing eclectic mix of sounds ranging from reggae to punk, from acoustic folk to ska, from pop to hard dance and electronic and all manner of world music including many types of music which defy the usual categories. This may appear strange but it is one of the aspects which helps create the most incredible atmosphere as all types of people mix together and celebrate their enjoyment of live music. There is one thing, besides the incredible scenery, that you will take away with you from the Wickerman Music Festival and that is the most amazing memories of friendliness not often experienced these days.

I have traveled far and wide and in my many months of travel, i have noticed a peculiar thing with people. I find that many people are not interested in bargaining for good deals and don’t try even before they start. It seems as if bartering has been lost on many people as is the art of comparison shopping. Did you know that every coin that you save when you go on vacation when making purchases on items such as food, accommodation and transport is an extra money that can be used for other things such as adventure and entertainment.

In the awesome city of New York, there is much that you can do as you go about your business here and a vacation in this city is like an Alice’s adventures in wonderland. This city has so much to offer that its hard to know where to start from. One of the things that i would strongly recommend is to make arrangements to save some cash before landing in New York. You can do this by taking time each evening to reflect and take notes about whom you’ve had a chance to talk to and what they offered you in terms of price & perks for accommodations.

Due to high competition, many hotels in New York are willing to offer perks to their clients in order for them to sleep in their hotels. The managers of these hotels are aggressive in selling the properties they manage since they know the more rooms they fill the more money they will make for the hotels resulting in secure jobs for themselves.

If you are aggressive enough and make notes of the hotels you’ve had a chance to visit and make tentative arrangements with, you will most likely work out a deal with one of them that is better that what they originally offered you.

This method might not work out very well if you try to secure a deal on a weekend that is known to be popular for travel. Therefore i would advice that you don’t search for accommodation in New York on popular holiday dates or on extended weekends for your trip. Apart from these, the rest of the weekends are open to all unless there is a popular event going onthat will attract a huge crowd to stay in the hotels.

Remember what i said in the beginning that many people usually give up good deals even before they try to get one? Not only can you get better deals by comparing competing hotels in New York, but can also get free perks such as meals, tickets to shows, spa packages at the respective hotels and gift certificates at the hotel gift store. You will be surprised at the length hotel managers will go in order to get business from you. The manager will be willing to risk doing business with you on the assumption that he will make up the “losses” in add-ons and other purchases.

Dont forget to be a generous tipper while you enjoy yourself in this hotel as some New York hotel managers can get irritated with you. Dont confuse being frugal and being cheap. Should you treat the staff at the hotel badly, they will surely remember you long after you’ve left The issue here is that you need to be polite and nice to the New York city hotel managers over the telephone and going with your best deal.

Do remember that getting the cheapest room does not necessarily mean that you are getting the best deal. There are other ways of looking at it. For example, if you are getting 1 or 2 meals every day that you stay at the hotel, and yet you are only paying five or 1o dollars more, then this might turn out to be a good deal, particularly if one of those meals turns out to be dinner.

In the mid-seventies I went to Harris for the first time as a young teacher, and the island and its people cast a spell over me which will last for ever.  There is something about the quality of the air and the light and the pace of life which combines with the history and the dramatic scenery to enthral all visitors. It seems to have become my mission to introduce as many people as possible to the joys of island living, and so, to this end, we bought Kinnoull to run as a self-catering business.

Kinnoull has been in our family for over 12 years, and is a spacious detached bungalow situated in an elevated position in Tarbert on the Isle of Harris, with panoramic views across the Minch to Skye. Its quiet residential location provides an ideal base for exploring both Harris and Lewis. Hill-walking, bird-watching, and boat trips are locally available. There are shops, restaurants and bars within 500m, and glorious sandy beaches are easily accessible by cycle, car or bus.

Kinnoull self catering cottage Isle of HarrisThe house stands in its own fenced garden with plenty of space for parking.  Electricity is metered (£1 coins), but central heating is included, as is bed linen (and towels on request).  There are two double bedrooms (one with an en-suite shower room), and one bedroom with 3 single beds.  There is a double sofa-bed in the lounge, and a travel cot, high chair etc are available, hence providing versatile accommodation.

Although the house is popular with couples and small groups it can easily accommodate up to 9 people for a family or friends get-together and people do keep coming back – so we must be doing something right! One large family also brought tents and the children slept in the garden!

The large lounge, which boasts an open fire, opens out into the recently added conservatory and extensive decking, which allows for enjoyment of the scenery in all types of weather. There is also a well-equipped kitchen, a dining room, a family bathroom and an additional toilet. There is Sky (freeview), and a large selection of books and games (board, outdoor and electronic!) is provided to help to make a visit to Kinnoull a most enjoyable experience.

Is work getting you down? Is it getting harder and harder to relax after long days of work at the office? Maybe it’s about time you took a break from it all; maybe it’s time for you to experience your first international white water rafting trip!

Imagine the great rivers of our planet, then imagine being able to experience any one of them from within a raft. If peace and tranquility are what you’re looking for, you can choose a tame and easy part of a river to have fun and relax or if some exhilaration and adrenalin is more up your street you can take on some breathtaking rapids.

Whatever you choose after each day of rafting is over you will be able to look forward to having peaceful nights camping out in the wilderness far away from your work and the stress it can bring.

Your guide being more than likely native of the area you are staying in, should be able to tell you things about the culture in the part of the world you are in and of course you should be able to try some of the local cuisine.

White water rafting hot spots throughout the world

Some of the most noted and amazing places to participate in white water rafting around the world are: the incredible Nile River around the Victoria Falls or the almighty Zambezi, Turkey?s Coruh River, the incredible beauty of Patagonia and the truly unique Omo Valley of Ethiopia.

All this and we haven’t even mentioned the most well-known white water rafting spot in the world, the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Additionally you can also find some cool white water rafting action for the whole family in the canyons of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

You could also choose to add other activities to your white water rafting trip, for instance: African safari park game watching, Nepalese trekking adventures, Saharan desert excursions or even visiting the pyramids of Egypt, Moroccan Beach activities and so, so much more.

Companies that organize this kind of international trips can be located via the Internet and your local travel agencies. These companies really can make dreams a reality.

For a vacation of a lifetime like this, money obviously can be an issue for some people; if you are one of those people then obviously some saving will be in order. An international white water rafting vacation for a lot of people really can be the vacation of a lifetime.

About the Author:

2008 saw the United Kingdom reach new heights in the number of annual music festivals. The total number of festivals for the year was well in excess of 400 with a great many offering some of the finest acts around at the moment as well as many up and coming acts and acts of the future. While many of the major music festivals put on extremely well known pop acts, bands and singers many of the small events chose to focus upon a very specific music genre. In stark contrast to the majority the Wickerman Music Festival, which is held annually at East Kirkcarswell, near Dundrennan in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, had a spectacular and eclectic mix of music acts ranging from KT Tunstall to the incredible Orphan Boy, Birds Vs Planes etc. to Dance DJ’s and world music, all spread across eight stages.

One of the most amazing things about the Wickerman Music Festival is not the fact that it celebrates an old cult movie (The Wickerman), nor the fact that it features the burning of a huge wickerman and a wickerboy,  it is the people who attend that make this music festival something really special. As I sat people watching I began to realize that every sector of society was represented from corporate bankers to well seasoned festival folk, from old age pensioners to babes in arms and plenty of children and family groups.

Another aspect of the festival is that each year more and more emphasis is placed upon “green” matters with various facilities for recycling. Each year an army of “Wickerpickers” roam around the festival site collecting litter and separating the materials ready for recycling. As soon as most festival sites are clear of the revelers there is usually a large area covered in litter and debris but at the Wickerman Music Festival there is little. In fact, within an hour or two of the people leaving the only evidence remaining is the security fencing and little patches of flattened and worn grass where tents once stood and areas of lush green upright grass where it had been protected by parked cars.

It seems strange that a music festival which pumps out loud booming music from various tents until after 5 in the morning should be considered a “family friendly” event. However the camping and parking areas are segregated so that there is a main camping area, a main parking area, a quiet area, a family area and a disabled area. Overall the system worked well excluding one or two exceptions where small groups insisted in playing loud music in the quiet area etc. Each year sees a number of improvements but sometimes they get it slightly wrong.

One plus point about the Wickerman Music Festival is that the toilet facilities are generally pretty clean and for those who prefer more luxurious toilets and showers there is a facility called “Down n Dirty”. Unfortunately this years down and dirty was not up to the same standards as last year and it was places too far from the disabled and family/quiet areas and at £5 a shower it was far too expensive for most. However there are times when you really must pay a sit down visit to the toilet and at £5 for the use of the toilets over the weekend it is a bargain.

Back to the Wicker Folk again and I have to mention that the Wickerman festival features some of the finest costumes. This may be that many choose to dress in animal costumes which feature strongly in the film (the old one NOT the Hollywood remake!). One of my favorites this year was a couple of lads riding one of those seaside dual bicycles but they had a portable sound system on the back and it was covered in a large umbrella. Once when it passed us there was a crowd of people dancing behind it following it around the festival site.

Well I suppose I will have to mention some more of the bands which appeared in 2008 but before I do I would like to mention that this year saw the appearance of only one main stage – the Summerisle Main Stage. While this stage was superb the fact that we lost the 2nd main stage (the Woodward Stage) meant that there was far too long a period between acts. If this is to be repeated at Wickerman 2009 then I hope that there are smaller acts, such as the excellent Kings of Macumba, playing between acts.

Headlining on Friday 25th of July was Gary Numan who rocked so hard that he managed to damage the p.a. system so that those on either side of the stage could not hear the mid-range (vocals, guitars etc) which was very strange but was only for the last few songs. After Gary Numan the Red Hot Chilli Pipers played a lively set to end the night. Supporting were the Alabama 3 who were mind blowing, amazing, and any other superlative you can think of. Other acts appearing on the main stage included Dodgy, The Fall, Max Romeo, Sonic Boom Six, Suzuki Method and Chi Weapon. The Capitol Scooter Tent was headlined by Sham 69 and featured bands such as the superb Orphan Boy, We Are The Physics, Twisted Nerve and more. The Rowan World Music Tent had the Hacienda Tour, Lou Hickey, The Runk Collective and the Kings of Macumba kicked off the day followed by the excellent Birds Vs. Planes (Previously named Stars of Track and Field UK). The Reggae tent pumped out their beats all day as did the three dance tents whereas the Acoustic Village was much more laid back.

On  Saturday 26th July the main stage at the Wickerman Music Festival was headed by KT Tunstall of whose set I missed half of after some clown managed to drench me and my cameras in sticky juice so I had to rush off to clean them! Other acts on the main stage included Dreammachine and the lively Dub Pistols but the real highlight of the show was the hilarious Cuban Brothers who entertained the crowd immensely. Hugh Cornwell played songs from his new solo album together with older songs and some Stranglers classics. Other main stage acts at Wickerman included Damien Dempsey, Sarah Gillespie and King Kayak . The Scooter tent had Neville Staple, Underground Heroes, AKA Ska and more.

Simply put the Wickerman Music Festival has the most amazing mix of music set in the most wonderful countryside of  Dumfries & Galloway with the most incredible crowd of festival goers and truly awesome food, clothes and other stalls. There is also a fairground that this year had a ferris wheel but the dodgems and waltzer are my favorites. Following the festival we took a drive around the local area but we were too exhausted to make the most of it but maybe next year we will save some energy to do a full tour of the area and some of the locations used in the making of the original Wickerman movie.

If you have an interest in music, particularly live music, and you have never been to a music festival Scotland has several which are an excellent introduction to the scene including the Wickerman festival but also the likes of the Tartan Heart Festival at Belladrum.
