A trip to the US is fun for the entire family. It is a vast country with different attractions that can please everyone. The US is host to millions of visitors each year, with summer being the peak tourist season. A great vacation can be ruined if you do not follow some basic rules and procedures.

There are several entry requirements and procedures that must be followed before a visitor can be admitted into the US. All the necessary documents must be presented to the immigration official at the port of entry. A Customs and Border protection declaration form must be filled out. The visitor must provide a US address where they will be staying.

Make sure you have a valid visa and a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay in the US. Fingerprint scans and a digital photograph will be taken for most visitors. You will also have to tell the officer the reason for your visit and how long you plan on staying.

There are several items that are restricted and cannot be brought into the US. You must declare them in the custom form. Items like fruits, vegetables, plants, and poultry cannot be brought into the US. Items not allowed must be discarded.

There is no limit on the amount of currency that can be brought in and taken out of the country. The customs form must be filled if the amount of currency si over 10,000 dollars. Credit cards are widely accepted and it is preferable to use them. Sometimes credit card companies routinely deny transactions made abroad. Inform them of your overseas travel before you leave. Use the credit card that has the least fees for foreign transactions.

Lack of socialized care means you are responsible for paying for any medical treatments you may need. They can be extremely expensive. It is imperative that you buy medical insurance that offers adequate coverage during your trip. You can dial 911 if you are suffering a life threatening emergency.

Until you actually arrive at a location, you don’t really know if what you’ve seen or heard are true. Unfortunately, they often are mostly fluff and the trip can be disappointing. Costa Rica, however, defies this trend.

Beaches. Costa Rica is known for them and it lives up to the hype. With coasts on both side of the country, it is hard not to. If you want waves, stick to the Pacific Coast. If you prefer diving, the East Coast is better.

Ah, but Costa Rica is much more than just beaches. It has world class wind surfing on Lake Arenal, stunning eco-tourism opportunities in protected rain forests and so much more. Oh, and the food is tremendous.

All and all, words are cheap. If you are considering a trip to the country, you need some hard information. Here are few tidbits to wet your appetite.

Costa Rica is odd in the makeup of its population. Unlike all the countries around it, most of its population are decendents from Europeans, particularly Spaniards.

The Spanish discovered the country and had visions of huge amounts of gold. They never found it, but overcame the disappointment and settled down into agriculture.

In 1821, Costa Rica joined other Spanish provinces in a joint declaration of independence from Spain. It took 21 more years to gain independence as a country.

Costa Rica had a basic agricultural based economy like much of Central America. Think bananas. It has converted into a tourism based economy, which allows it to maintain a more stable economy.

Costa Rica has no standing military, but does have a police force.

Costa Rica is definitely the most visited nation in the Central America region with a $1.7 billion a year tourism industry

Education is tremendous in Costa Rica with the country having a 96 percent literacy rate. Average life expectancy for a woman is 79 years while men come in at 74. Spanish is the dominant language.

Costa Rica puts Seattle to shame when it comes to rain. 100 inches annually is the number. Mountain areas can get as many as 250 inches. Temperatures always remain in the 70 to 90 degree range.

Instead of a military, the Constitution guarantees universal public education for all citizens. Primary education is obligatory, and both preschool and high school are free. The county has leading Universities in biological fields.

In an old world mix, the Roman Catholic Church and government are in bed on marriage. The government only acknowledges marriages by the church. All other marriagesare civil and must be by a lawyer.

At the end of the day, there are tons of different things you could know about Costa Rica. The most important way to find them out, however, is just to visit the country and take in one of the best travel destinations in the world.

If you love a mystery, consider a vacation on Kauai, Hawaii.

Here’s the mystery: what’s it like on the Hawaiian island of Ni’ihau? This 550-square-mile island is the westernmost of the main Hawaiian islands and has been privately owned since 1864 by the Robinson family, which forbids tourists.

Ni’ihau (Nee-ee-how) clings to the sea, low on the horizon, visible from the southwest shore of Kauai, 17 miles away. Native Hawaiian is spoken there by the 200 or so residents. In fact, it’s the only place where native Hawaiian is a living language. Hawaiian is the language of the island’s K-8 school.

Ni’ihau residents regularly cross the strait to Kauai to buy provisions. Ni’ihau is short on provisions because it is a desert, lying in the rain shadow of the tall mountain on Kauai, Mt. Wai-ale-ale, drenched with 460 inches of rainfall every year. It is often called the wettest spot on earth.

Sheep ranches have historically supported the people of Ni’ihau, under the ownership of the Robinson family.

The women of Ni’ihau string tiny shells into complex shell leis, a stunning folk art. Their families comb the beaches to find the miniature, pearl-like shells, collecting them in a variety of colors–whites, browns, and reds. Then they sort the shells. The artist uses a simple awl to make a hole in each tiny shell, breaking at least half of them in the process. Because there are no cars on the island, bicycles are plentify, and her awl may be made from a recycled bicycle spoke.

These tiny shells are still found on Ni’ihau, but not on neighboring Kauai where agricultural runoff has tended to kill off the shell-makers. The resulting shell leis are rare, hard to find, and precious.

So, how did Ni’ihau form? Was it the first Hawaiian island, at the opposite end of the chain from the most recently formed one, the Big Island of Hawaii? Ancient Hawaiians thought it was the first one, the original home of the volcano goddess Pele, who hopped islands over the ages and is currently living in the active volcano on the Big Island. But scientists say that Kauai is the oldest island, and that Ni’ihau is a side vent of the volcano that formed Kauai. Ni’ihau is flat and sandy, except for an eroded lava dome on the eastern side of the island. There are also two freshwater lakes.

It’s possible to find a map of Ni’ihau, and pictures of its rock formations. But how can you go and see? In fact, the Robinson family is allowing a few forms of tourism now. Some helicopter tours from Kauai are allowed to land on remote beaches. And you can take a hunting safari, to control populations of feral bighorn sheep and Polynesian boars. In addition, scuba divers regularly dive off Ni’ihau.

Access to Ni’ihau is from Kauai, 17 miles away. While you’re on Kauai, you’ll want to play on the beaches and in the surf. You’ll also want to look at the stunning natural wonder that is the Na Pali coast, the northwest side of Kauai.

Here are 10 tips for the seasoned road warrior, to make travelleling a more pleasurable experience.

1. Choose your Travel Modality Wisely

What mode of transport you decide on can vary depending on the type and length of journey. Long trips are obviously taken by plane, but shorter one might be easier by train, or maybe automobile. When trying to work out which to choose, you should consider factoring the time it takes to get to the airport, as well as time spent in the checkin line or passport control. The weather is also a deciding factor. It wouldn’t be the first time that poor weather delayed a flight.

2. It may be easier to fly from an alternative airport. The same can be said for you destination airport. It’s not unusual for smaller airports within the same city or area to be less congested and have less delays.

3. Source all your Maps Before you Leave

Research your destination before you leave by getting maps. There are a number of websites online to do this, like City Search (http://citysearch.com/) or even googlemaps. You can print them of and then I recommend keeping them in a plastic sleave to protect them from the element, in case you have to check it on a rainy street corner.

4. You Don’t Need to Carry Hard Copy

Rather than carrying large piles of brochures or sales letters, take electronic documents on diskettes and have them printed at a local printing service. Similarly, if you are working a booth in a trade show, it’s a good idea to carry electronic documents in case you run out of the stack you shipped from the office.

5. Inform you Cellular Company that You are Travelling

Mobile phone companies regularly offer new rates. Check with your company to be sure you’re getting the best deal — some now include long distance charges in the monthly fee. If your business travel will take you to small, out-of-the way towns, your digital phone might not work. You will need an analogue or dual digital/analogue phone for such trips.

6. Pick a Hotel that Caters for the Business Traveller

Hotels that cater to business travellers will have Internet capabilities and offer access to business machines such as faxes and photocopiers.

7. Remember Adaptors and Converters.

Don’t leave home without you electrical adaptors, especially when travelling abroad. This includes you phone adaptors too. If you are unsure as to what you need you can visit a good travel store for assistance.

8. Use Phone Cards

Phone bills can get quite expensive, especially if calling friend and family from a far off place. A much cheaper option is the prepaid calling card.

9. Get an Interantional Driving Licence

If you are travelling overseas, it is a good idea to get aan international drivers licence as it may be accepted in far more countries that you own own one. This shouldn’t be hard to obtain and just require you to shpw your current licence. Your locall AA should be able to supply more information for you.

10. Protect Yourself Against Theft

One very important thing to do when you travel is to make copies of all your travel document e.g. passport and travel insurance, card cards etc… These copies should be left with a friend or family member at home. Pack your electrical equipment properly in way that doesn’t advertise them to suspecting thieves. You can buy laptop cases that hide waht they are used for. Also never put important document in hip bags or back pockets.

During the early years of aviation, people were constantly looking for practical uses of airplanes. People were amazed with the machines that enabled men to fly, but the question of what to do with them plagued everyone’s mind. Of course, the uses for airplanes could not be limited to entertainment, because that would be wasting the huge potential of the technology on a pretty superficial industry. The air freight industry began with the journey of a bolt of silk from Dayton to Columbus, Ohio in November 1910.

That fateful trip gave birth to the airfreight industry as we know it today. After that event, everything just progressed to new heights for the air freight industry. One of the pioneers of the air freight industry is American Railway Express. The name of the company points out to the fact that before the advent of the air freight industry, cargo was usually transported by train.

The airfreight industry made a lot of conveniences possible. First, there was the matter of speed. Air freight sped up deliveries between businesses. This means that the air freight industry made it possible for businesses to acquire various merchandise when they needed it. This also saved a lot of money on storage. Before the advent of the air freight industry, businesses had to keep as much stock as possible. This helped them to meet orders in time. Because of the introduction of air freight, businesses could just fly in any merchandise.

During the 1920’s, shipping of cargo via air grew more popular. In November 14, 1926, the National Air Transport Company was born. This company delivered the first air cargo in the United States in September 1, 1927. Many more companies were founded as promoters of the air freight industry. As the industry was still relatively young, these companies did not make much profit.

The air freight industry got to a slow start because of the fact that they had stiff competition coming from passenger carriers. Many established passenger carriers opposed the establishment of an all-cargo air freight industry mainly because they feared it would destabilize the air industry.

Another reason why the air freight industry did not grow as people hoped was that most businesses were unable to sustain the huge losses associated with starting an air freight operation. While some people attempted to remedy this by combining air freight with air passenger transport, they only succeeded in slowing down the industry.

The revolution of the air freight industry came about when a man named Fred Smith noticed that the common practice of combining air freight with passenger freight was highly inefficient. He proposed that air freights should have different flight patterns from passenger flights. He was successful in gathering funds mainly because of his proposal for a guaranteed next-day-delivery service. And so it was that in April 1973, the Federal Express began operations. Of course, the initial years of business were hard. However, after three years of flying cargo, the company was beginning to show profit.

By the 1980’s, Federal express was a household name. This just goes to show you how far a truly great idea can take you. Today, the air freight industry is booming and companies make millions of dollars in profits. That’s a far cry from the way that air freight businesses lost money in the past.
