Tartan Gems is my blog about Scotland, the place where I live and raise my family. Scotland has the most wonderful history and while many of the stories are often gruesome they can sometimes contain hidded gems of information which can still resonate today.

Further to this the Scottish humor is highly amusing and none more so when it occurs during everyday events or historical events. Often when man is forced to face adversity the best of him comes to the surface and there is something really special about the humanity and humor of poor people, especially when there is a common cause – and Scotland has had many!

From the men who stood on the thin red line to those who lost their lives at Culloden the bravery of the Scots has never been doubted. Many of the world’s greatest men and women were either born in Scotland or had Scottish parents. Indeed it can be truthfully said that it was Scotland that made Britain Great.

Of all the many great inventions and the many spectacular discoveries made by man many have been made by Scottish scientists. Some of our everyday items were once luxuries but today we would struggle without them, were created or discovered by a Scot. From the incredible medical advances to the world of philosophy Scotland has often delivered excellence and I hope to write about much of it here on Tartan Gems. So bookmark this site or take a look at our RSS and call back soon to see if I have added any further stories of interest.
